About Julie Sancken

I am a wife to my high school sweetheart, and a stay at home momma to my 2 kids, Brayden (3) and Kenley (1). I am a born again believer who knows the power of God's love and feels blessed to serve Him. I am a graduate of Illinois State University with a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences, and my dream job next to staying home with my kids would be as an adoption worker. In my spare time, I am an aspiring photographer, blogger at www.back2basicsblog.com, baker, farmer's wife, online shopper, and self-proclaimed technology geek- but my most important role is that of wife and mom. You can usually find me with coffee in one hand and my iPhone in the other while chasing down my rambunctious toddler(s).

Wonderful Daughters

FLT@

I was a boy mom first. Our first child, Brayden, was born in July 2009 and all things boy encompassed our lives. In early 2011, when I found out I was expecting once again, I prayed for the health of that baby, and dreamed for a daughter. Don’t get me wrong– I LOVE being a [...]

Celebrating Mother’s Day

Celebrating

  Everywhere you look this week, there are reminders that Mother’s Day is fast approaching. Commercials, banners above the card displays in stores, and lots of blog posts on Mother’s Day gift guides. As a mom, I totally get sucked into this stuff. I can’t wait until Brayden brings me Mother’s Day gifts from school, [...]

4 Ways to Look Great in Family Photos

4ways

Last May, I wrote this post and challenged you all to get IN the photos with your kids. As a mom, I am always behind the camera, rarely in front of it, and I don’t want my kids to ever wonder why I was never in any of the photos. It is so important to [...]

Behind the Lens

BehindLensFeature

Everywhere we look, there are reminders that we aren’t “enough” in society. Magazine covers constantly showing us the latest fitness crazy, makeup tip, or health food that you didn’t know about. We aren’t thin enough. We don’t eat healthy enough. Our bodies don’t bounce back after childbirth fast enough. We aren’t enough.  Let’s take celebrities [...]

It is Well with My Soul

itis

Earlier this month, I attended the Hearts at Home National Conference. Hearts at Home has been around for 20 years, and is a conference that seeks to refresh and equip mothers of all ages with workshops and keynote speakers. It is always an incredible experience, being in an auditorium with almost 5,000 other moms, worshipping [...]

7 Ways to Bloom Your Photography Skills

SQUAREbloom

Photography has been a love of mine since my freshman year of college. I got my first (small) digital camera– I believe it was around 6 or 7 megapixels is all! And my, have I come a long way since those days! In the last 3 years, I have purchased my first AND second DSLR [...]

Loving Well

IMG_7938

For the past 3 weeks, my mom, sister and I have been doing a women’s Bible study at church called Loving Well by Beth Moore. It is no coincidence that the focus of this study is the theme verse for this month at Fancy Little Things. God is clearly trying to teach me something. In [...]

Bringing A Still to Life {Part 2}

fltfeb2

Two weeks ago, I shared with you how to transform inanimate objects into art pieces that you could display in your home. I have a few ideas up my sleeve for doing just THAT! The more I look around, the more things I see that would be FUN to display! In the meantime, I want [...]

Bringing a Still to Life {Part 1}

fltfeb1

We all have objects, collections even, that mean something to us. Inanimate objects that have some sort of story behind them. A vase that was your grandmother’s. A clock that was in your parents house. A collection of figurines. For me? It’s my dust on my furniture  scarves. If you know me at all, you know [...]

Keeping Digital Photos Organized

fltpost12

In keeping with this month’s theme of being a work in progress, I have a confession to share with you all. I am terrible at backing up my photos. Terrible. And as a photographer, I am SURE that this is a GIANT no no. It has to be! SO– I am going to share with [...]

What I’m Not

IMG_2180-2

As we enter into a new month, and a new year, we all have aspirations of the things we will do differently than we did last year. New diets, working out, being more patient, kind, or generous. Not drinking pop, not eating carbs (ok, maybe not!), and trying new things. But do we stick with [...]

Capturing Christmas Lights

IMG_2151

As the twinkle of Christmas lights begin to shine almost everywhere you look, I can’t help but want to capture them with my camera. There is just something magical about Christmas lights, wouldn’t you agree? But–they are not AS easy to capture as they appear! Today I want to share with you the easiest way [...]
