HELLO!!!!! i am so excited to be back. as some of you might already know – my family moved out of our home in upstate NY and moved back to Southern California just 2 weeks ago. it has been a long, long 8 week process and excited to begin settling into our new home & routine.
as with any new home, we’ve been altering old furniture, re-purposing pieces, spray-painting EVERYTHING {speaking of spray paint, i now purchase my paint from Lowe’s… it’s called Valspar Gloss and it’s AMAZING…. yep, photos from other projects will post in time} and i have been documenting most of the last two weeks.
when the new school year starts many people think about buying school supplies, new school clothes for the kids, new sneakers, dragging out fall decor — i do some of those things, but most importantly, it’s time to change the fabric & plastic on our dining room chairs! i have done this for years every fall… even before kids. 1 year with any fabric makes me crazy… so, my little 2 year old and i went off to Joann’s and purchased 1 1/2 yards of outdoor canvas cotton fabric – and with just a few supplies, we got started.
SUPPLIES
- enough fabric to cover chairs {i measure 2 inches extra on each edge}
- staple gun & staples
- scissors
- screw gun or screwdriver to remove chair cushions from chairs
step 1: remove cushion from chair and place fabric back side up — add your cushion and fold opposite ends..
step 2: and start stapling — corners next…
step 3: corners are NOT fun especially when on a rounded corner. so make sure you have somehow old or staple to help with these stinkin’ corners. i folded mine like i would a gift – tucking the inside in first & add a staple.
step 4: then fold the bottom piece up and staple again!
step 5: & finally the top piece of the corner!
step 6: lastly – whether you have kids or not, consider spraying them down with a few layers of scotch guard… and repeat every few months after a good cleaning – follow instructions on the can.
step 7: reattach to the chairs & enjoy!
here’s my new dining room with fun printed chairs — hides the dirt and ALL the things my two sweet kids drop throughout every meal!
i hope i’ve inspired you to grab some fabric at Joann’s or maybe some you have stored away in your closet and consider recovering your chairs this week! stop by next monday for a fun game to play with the kids & some shots of all my spray painting projects.

Here a question…do you repurpose or save the covers you pull off? Or are they too messy to deal with? You should start a little scrap book with swatches to watch how your taste changes throughout the years (or in different locations, with/without kids, etc.).
Love this! It looks completely different. So, now we need to figure out a time to do my outdated living room furniture.
What a great idea to do it yearly– wish they’d had the selection of outdoor fabrics when my kids were little!
Thanks for the steps on how to do this. I have always wanted to try it but never had the courage to actually follow through. Love the fabric you chose.
thanks ladies — Danielle, I think I have swatches from the past several years. I need to post those, ey?!
